Review: The Pretty Reckless EP

The Pretty Reckless EP starts out with a very calm and soothing violin-esque sound. Then, about ten seconds in, The Pretty Reckless’ fitting sound comes out.

It has a very Nirvana-like feel, which has been said to be one of their major influences. The rest of the song is unforgiving and definitely has the angst-ridden teenager feel to it. Taylor Momsen believes in what she’s singing about and it’s obvious that these aren’t lyrics written by some stranger found on Craigslist. These are emotive words that come straight out of the heart of a teenager. Their first single, “Make Me Wanna Die,” was released on the “Kick-Ass” soundtrack and they can be seen playing their music live on the Warped Tour 2010.

The soft side of Taylor is on display in “My Medicine”, and there is no doubting the toe-tapping catchy riffs in “Goin’ Down”. The last song, “Zombie”, is a surprising change from the rest of the album. It doesn’t have the hard and heavy feeling as “Make Me Wanna Die,” nor does it have the sweet sounds of “My Medicine”. It’s something more than that. It almost seems like the sound of “Zombie” is exactly the direction she wants to go with the band. The instruments seem to be more in sync with each other, while Taylor’s voice meshes with them in a way that is a bit different from the other tracks. Overall, the EP showcases The Pretty Reckless’ variety as a solid band.
