Review: Macy Gray – The Sellout

The Sellout is a far cry from what this album actually is; soul and grit, reminiscent of the sounds of Motown, with sleek elements of pop and rock.

The first single, “Kissed It”, which can also be heard on one of Bravo’s summer television promos, features alt-rock supergroup Velvet Revolver with guitar chops galore. The chorus creates a call-and-response effect, and the shuffle beat behind it gives this track a saucy, upbeat vibe. There are a few other notable guest artists on this album. “Still Hurts”  features Romika on additional vocals, a protege of Gray’s very own Music Academy.  An appearance is also made by Bobby Brown (the one and only!) to bring you “Real Love,” a real love song with a real sweet kick. Another track to hit TV waves is “Beauty In The World,” featured on the season finale of Ugly Betty. Here, the lyrics are almost sugary, yet still a little edgy, shake your booty/ boys and girls/ there is beauty in the world, creating a mantra that is worth repeating.

The quality of Gray’s vocals are truly prominent in this album. You’ve got the singer up front and the band behind her, just like in the old days when the whole gang had to stand in the studio and play live on tape with little room to mess up. For anyone new to Gray’s funky fusion genre- think the modern side of New Jack Swing- The Sellout will declare you a fan. As for those who’ve been with Macy Gray since her debut in 1999, she reminds you “this is my gimmick/ and I wanna win it.” Believe it!
