Review: Los Lobos – Tin Can Trust

Los Lobos is an American Chicano band that’s been around for the past three decades. With their new album Tin Can Trust, the band puts together a solid arrangement of rock and roll and their traditional Mexican roots to create a record worth listeners’ time.

Starting with the two Spanish language tunes, “Yo Canto” and “Mujer Ingrata”, Los Lobos gives the album spice. “Yo Canto” has the feel of a sultry dance song while “Mujer Ingrata” almost seems to have a polka influence with an accordion and horns to begin the song. While both are different ends of the spectrum, both are muy bien. They allow the listener to get a feel for the traditional without being overwhelmed.

Next are the 3 ½ minutes of straight up jamming in “Do the Murray”. A killer guitar riff paired with a steady clang of a cymbal creates the need to tap a foot with the rhythm making the audience feel a part of the music. Finally, Los Lobos gives their take on what can be considered a ballad in the title track “Tin Can Trust”. The bluesy influence found in both the music and the lyrics makes this song the one to go to on a laid back kind of day. The words are that of a blue collar man without much to his name but the one thing that matters, “Oh darlin’/can’t buy you all those pretty things/Oh honey/it’s only love I bring.

Los Lobos have been around going on forty years, and after listening to Tin Can Trust, it’s easy to see why. With a solid mix of rock, blues, and traditional Spanish influence, fans will continue to pick up what Los Lobos is throwing down.
