With a voice that is strong yet airy, powerful yet playful, Katie Melua ventures into a fantastical world on her fourth studio album,The House. One cannot help but wonder what inspired this LP, as the uncanny combination of quirky lyrics and beautifully seductive vocals makes for an interesting listen.
Opening with “I’d Like to Kill You”, Katie Melua (Listen Here) sets the tone for her album, bouncing between playful and sinister in a way that makes listeners question who is the crazy one, them or her: “I’d like to kill you with a glance/I’d like to put you in a trance.”
The metaphors continue, delivering a more positive message about finding one’s self in one’s differences on the catchy track, “Tiny Alien”, “What’s my DNA? Can you make a change/ so I can gain/ your insight and take flight. ”
With smooth, bluesy vocals and a range of tempos, there’s something for everyone on The House. Other notable songs are the uptempo “A Happy Place” and “God on Drums, Devil on Bass”, which brings a fun, rock- influenced sound to the album, as her voice floats with the guitar riffs.
“Plague of Love” is a catchy, fun track that should definitely be a single off the album, as one can’t help but dance while listening. For great lyrics about the dynamics of a relationship, try listening to “A Moment of Madness”. Here she creatively captures the essence of a power struggle through crescendos and numerous scales, while the fun-fair tune behind her depicts the showy, grandiose turn that relationships can take.
From the metaphorical lyrics to her smooth yet funky vocals, dripping with blues and confidence, Katie Melua takes listeners on a wonderful ride with The House.
