Review: Dead Confederate – Sugar

The new album, Sugar, by Dead Confederate proves that the band has the ability to create full sounding guitar bashed rock music. Hailing from Georgia, they’ve taken the old rock and roll influences of the area and created a new version of the style with an edgier sound.

“Run from the Gun” is a great track with an intro that just makes you want to hear more. And then there’s the chorus, which is one of the catchiest elements on the album. However the lyrics are very sombre and appear to tell the tale of a bad relationship and the feelings of finally walking away.

Another highlight has to be “Shocked To Realize,” with its jittery guitar riffs that give the track an uneasy feel. But Hardy Morris’ voice smooths down the rough tone and makes the track work.

“Giving It All Away” maintains drums and tambourines and is slightly reminiscent of alternative country music, but again, they manage to fuse genres together, creating a completely new sound with talk of dreams and isolation, perhaps showing dissatisfaction with life.

From listening to the album from start to finish, it gets darker and deeper as it plays on, making the listener feel as if they’ve been on a journey with the band.

Some fans have declared Sugar to be a step back towards their earlier work, however, it’s clear that it is a progression towards modern alternative rock. Dead Confederate has grown into themselves, creating the loud and big sound band that they are on Sugar.
