Review: Cephalic Carnage – Misled By Certainty

Any band that refers to themselves as “rocky mountain hydro grind” and can back it up with consistently solid music for almost two decades deserves to achieve all the success that Cephalic Carnage has seen, especially on their latest release, Mislead By Certainty.

Cephalic Carnage started out in the early 90′s, creating their own version of a deathgrind, grindcore and jazz mixture, incorporating humor and parodies into all of their five albums. How often do you hear of a grindcore band that happens to have a saxophone playing along with them?

From the beginning of “The Incorrigible Flame” , it’s obvious why they’ve lasted longer than some more well-known bands. They have a specific style and they have grown together as a band, rather then trying to force out the music. The guitar solos are awe-inspiring and Lenzig‘s voice borders on being almost as varied as Mariah Carey‘s.

The album continues with each song giving the listener another side of Cephalic Carnage. “Warbots A.M.” is incredibly fast paced, when compared to the rest. “Abraxas Of Filth” focuses more on the talents of the band members with Nick Schendzielos‘ bass guitar skills being showcased throughout. “Cordyceps Humanis” has a Six Feet Under feel to it, changing up the style that the album has been thus far. Then with the very next song, “Raped By An Orb” they speed up slightly with a mild Deicide sound.

Cephalic Carnage is obviously a band that isn’t making music for fame, fortune or anything along those lines. Instead, they continue to make music because it’s what they love to do. The sheer variety of songs on this album provides something for every metal fan out there.
