NewVillager’s self-titled debut album under record label IAMSOUND is a hybrid of many genre samples and ideas. There are often variations between high and low vocals, and a layering of sounds to produce a unique result with its generous use of synth and effects.
Airy vocals function as an accent on most of the tracks, and light keys are never too far from punctuating the heavier synth sounds. There is a complex chemistry with the layering and accents, but the sounds themselves are not too complicated. The album does become a bit inaccessible, however, making it easy to lose the listener’s attention.
It opens with “Cocoon House”, which provides a catchy riff, sounding both celebratory and contemplative. This sets the whimsical tone heard throughout the rest of the album, an anthem for liberation. There are some distinguishing characteristics in the following tracks, with a percussion-dominant intro on “Rich Doors”, and a more gritty sound on “Say the Code”. Further, “Upholder” allows the guitar to establish its presence a bit more liberally. Additionally, lyrics like My mind won’t slow down, along with the lyrics on “How to Get Back” that suggest a longing to return to another place, NewVillager appears to be the exploration of a mind that feels completely trapped.
The album ends all too appropriately with “Overpass”, reflecting exactly what the title suggests; sounds of passing cars are simulated, with the sound of pouring rain and wind as a soundtrack to the drive.
NewVillager is fitting as an escape from one’s daily angst, yet it should function as no more than background music to a party. While there are a lot of elements layered within the tracks, it never quite evolves or builds a story. There doesn’t seem to be a purpose with each sound, thus sounding a bit disoriented comprehensively.
Final Words: Press “play” and never look back, even once the album is over.
