A corpse’s soundtrack for eternal un-dead life, Sleep Over’s Forever is soothing to the buried bone, a slow groove of synthetics, ghostly lyrics, and at times horror film sound effects. It comes from the mind and maze of equipment of Stefanie Franciotti, the original and only member remaining from the trio that began as Sleep Over in 2010.
Forever hints at 80’s synth-pop while keeping drums almost non-existent, creating a melting of sound effects and synthesizer sounds. “Crying Game” takes the neon tears of Ziggy Stardust and lays them down into an upsetting vibration of space-synth ending abruptly after nearly 5 minutes of visceral pain. Although Franciotti relies on her ghostly vocals and synth combinations to create an un-dead effect in songs like “Untitled” and “Behind Closed Doors”, she redeems herself with uplifting, psychedelic tracks that stay above the horizon of the graveyard, such as “Romantic Streams” and “The Heavens Turn By Themselves”. The last song of the album, “Don’t Poison Everything”, reveals a hidden track that is sweeping, fading, and calming, leaving Forever with a resolution to the ghostly dream.
Stephanie Franciotti is successful in inducing a drool-worthy stupor of relaxation with the occasional jolt of eerie chords to remind you that you are alive. Upon first listen, Forever seems a bit slow. When given a second chance, it becomes an interesting blend of outer space floating and running from ghouls that crawl out of television static.
Final Words: Stick with this one, graveyard tunes are fun too.
