Review: The Summer Set – Everything’s Fine

You may have heard Arizona quintet The Summer Set’s debut album Love Like This, as well as bonus EP Love Like Swift, consisting of six Taylor Swift covers. Their recent, Everything’s Fine, doesn’t contain any Swift tunes, but is equally playful. The 11 track album is full of poppy numbers with grand sweeping choruses and catchy lyrics occasionally verging into the ridiculous. It has a great deal of range moving from dance to acoustic to punk-inspired, appealing to pop enthusiasts of all variants.

The album opens with accurately titled “About a Girl”. Brian Dales’ vocals start out a bit weak, perhaps just a touch too whiny. However, as the song comes into full swing, with heavier instrumentation and doubled vocals, Dales sings out and the song becomes stronger and enjoyable. The first few songs stay consistent with “Someone Like You”, being the catchiest number. Be careful with this one; it’ll stick in your head. In fact, be prepared to sing it over and over again for the rest of the day.

After a semi-strong start, the middle of the album falls apart a bit. The lyrics become altogether too ridiculous. Lyrics like “we stick together like cellophane/ give me a straight jacket/ I love you insane” on weak numbers like “Love To You” just can’t be forgiven. Others like “Must Be the Music” push pop a bit too far and the attempt at a dance-ier number fails. Luckily, it ends strongly with “Don’t Let Me Go”. It has a little more weight to it, revealing some genuine emotion and substance that the other songs would benefit from as well.

Despite the trouble spots and general lack of depth, Everything’s Fine is fun and easy to listen to—great for a carefree summer jam.

Final Words: Poppy and uncomplicated.
