Review: Naomi Greenwald – Darkbloom

What would you get it you combined the smooth vocals of Fleetwood Mac with the depressing tones of Bright Eyes (at his darkest)? Well, you would probably get something along the lines of Naomi Greenwald’s newest album, Darkbloom. For those who enjoy turning off all their lights and crying in the dark by themselves, this album might be for you.

DarkBloom combines solemn guitar riffs with simple drum lines. Add to that the seductive voice of Naomi Greenwald and you have songs that might embarrass you to listen to in public because of the sheer dreariness of the melodies. Listeners need be warned to keep this album in the safe confinement of their own house.

That’s not to say that the album does everything wrong. Granted, there are some songs that really nail it. The first song, “Evan Williams” is the correct combination of minor chords with Naomi’s relaxing, almost Stevie Nicks-like voice. It is a sultry yet eerie song that would be perfect to listen to while doing homework or right before going to bed.

As the album goes on, repetitive lyrics such as “you make me feel like…” and “what do you want from me?” make the listener almost uncomfortable with a feeling of desperation. The lyrics do nothing more than add to the overall melancholy mood of the LP.

“Dead Metaphor,” track seven on Darkbloom is somehow upbeat while still being extremely dreary. Perhaps because of Greenwald’s stacado notes and the upbeat lyrics which talk about her wanting to find a true love. The dreariness comes in with the simple guitar chords and melodramatic drum sequence. Just when you thought you could escape the drab just for one song. Guess that’s too much to ask though.

Every instrument in “Desire to Fall” is used mediocre at best. Nothing stands out, not even Naomi’s voice in this one. The guitar chords are simplistic and boring. The overall melody of the song is something worth skipping when listening to the album. Actually, maybe just skip listening to the whole album, in general. It will save you some time that might have been otherwise wasted.

Conclusion: DarkBloom masters the art of being mediocre more depressing version of the early stages of Fleetwood Mac…if that is an art at all.
