Pete Yorn is back again with his self-titled, sixth studio album.
Produced by Frank Black of the Pixies, it delivers pure, unvarnished vocals and guitar, and combines classic rock with elements of Yorn’s signature country fused sound (with a few surprises thrown in). Both the album and the artist are a good listen.
The singer begins with “Precious Stone,” a classic rock track that accurately defines the rest of the album. It is old school good, with solid lyrics and a great, mid tempo melody: “I found a way to live forever/ I found a place where no one cares” Pete sings. It is followed by “Rock Crowd,” which blends the acoustic sounds of alternative music with an up tempo, incredibly catchy hook. On “Velcro Shoes,” he blends rock elements and raw vocals to create a funky song about finding ones own taste. With his voice engineered to lay behind the instruments, fans are forced to pay special attention to the musicianship.
“Paradise Cove” is another up tempo track, but with a totally different vibe than anything else on the album. Seemingly influenced by psychedelic rock, Pete allows his voice to sink into the drums and rolling guitar riffs, saying “I got what I wanted/and it’s never enough.” “The Chase” shares a similar tempo, but he brings back the classic country rock sound that he is known for on “Stronger Than.”
Overall, the album brings together different avenues of rock, bridged by a voice that makes any melody classic and smooth.
Conclusion: You can never go wrong with classic tunes, kids.
