Get Scared (vocalist Nicolas Mathews, and guitar players Johnny B and Bradley Lloyd) has been riding high following the amazing success of their self-titled debut EP. Now signed with Universal Motown Records, the Utah-based band is prepping for the release of their LP, Best Kind Of Mess, and is currently on tour with Escape The Fate, Motionless In White, Alesana, and Drive A until March.
eBurban caught up with Johnny B. to talk about their fans, fashion, and what the future holds.
eBU: As far as band members go, you all seem to be close friends. Can you tell me the back story to the three of you?
Johnny B: Long story haha, us three have been friends for years, I (Johnny) met the other guys through mutual bands playing shows, we all got a long very well and discovered that we all wanted something different from what was going on, started sending each other song ideas… it just worked too damn good! Sooo I quit my current band and did this full time! 2 years later here we are!
It has been said that the most exciting time for a band is right before they sign with a major label. Can you give us a little insight on what’s been like getting to this point? Is there one crazy moment that you thought to yourself: Wow, am I really doing this?
Yea I can agree that it’s a pretty damn exciting time! We were like giddy little kids! Haha as far as getting to this point, we’ve had our hard times and exciting times and discouraging times! If I could relate it to anything it be like being under deep water for what seems like forever, then finally taking that amazing breath once you surface haha. We’ve all worked very hard to get here.
What generally connects you to your fans? As in – what of yourself do you see in your fans?
When we see our fans in the crowd we can definitely tell they have a passion for music! So it goes both ways because we see that and that makes us feel connected to them!
Being there is an obvious attraction to the darker side of life, where does this fasination/inspiration come from?
Satan? Haha jk we are all positive people! But for some reason we love black, dark imagery, and dark music! It just makes us happy, good and fulfilled! Can’t really dissect or explain love! It just happens!
As a band, you guys seem to have a keen fashion sense. Do you find it to be a just as important form of expression as music?
Fashion is a good form of self expression but music is by far a better way to express yourself, wether if you’re writing it or just listening to a playlist – at least that’s how we feel.
Is your sound influenced by any particular bands?
Hmm I think it’s mainly from John Feldmann! We’ve all been huge fans of his music and everything he produces, but who knows! it could be from where we live, Feldmann did ask: So you’re from Utah too? What do they put in the water down there?
After all the touring you’ve done I am sure you’ve create somewhat of a routine. Can you take us through a typical day on the road?
Oh boy…. hmm wake up in either the van or sometimes a hotel. Start the search for coffee and food… Successful about 70% of the time. We usually have a few hour drive ahead of us so we start driving. Driving sucks!
Then, we finally get to the venue! Load our gear and start preparing for the show, by this time we’ve probably lost a set of keys, a shoe, access pass and a guitar… Best kind of mess!! Woo !!
Close to show time we all gather and prepare ourselves, sometimes jam Slipknot to get pumped up. We go on stage and do what we do best! Once we’re done playing we try to wash off all the sweat and spit and whatever else, go out front and hang out and talk to people, sign stuff, and take pics! We love meeting everyone!! At the end of the night everyones exhausted, we search for food, then sleep and it all starts again! Hardest work we’ve ever had to do and we couldn’t be happier to be here!
As for future projects, are you working on anything in particular? Are there any themes or concepts that you are looking forward to diving into? What about 2011? More touring?
Can definitely count on more touring!! As far as new projects, we are constantly working on stuff, but the main thing we are exciting for right now is to release our new album Best Kind of Mess and to play new some from that on stage!!
