HW: But you still know there are people out there who know about your music and they absolutely love it. One thing a lot of artists complain about is they honestly don’t have their own life. They’re all over the news, all over magazines.
DB: Yeah, I definitely don’t have that problem right now (laughs). I’m at a very tolerable and manageable place. I’m working very hard and I don’t have much time off. But apart from that, I feel really lucky to be able to walk down the street and not get hassled.
HW: I read something very interesting about you; Prince invited you to jam with him and his band at his house! Is that true?
DB: Yeah, I was living in Los Angeles at the time and I was playing piano at a hotel, and he came in and had a drink or coffee or something. Then a few weeks later I got a call from somebody that works with him and said that he wanted me to come to his house and play some music. So, I went over there, played music, and hung out. It was really fun and very unreal.
HW: I’m totally jealous. Have you had any more highlights like that? Do things like that happen to you a lot, especially now?
DB: Well, I did a show called Live At Daryl’s House with Daryl Hall, which was amazing because I’m obsessed with Hall, and Daryl sang a bunch of my songs, and I got to play with him and his band, so that was a really really amazing experience. I have a huge amount lot of love and respect for Daryl Hall so that was really exciting for me.
HW: Ok. Now, final question. One of the reasons I loved Bible Belt, and I’m sure a lot of people would agree with me on this, is because it really sounds like an unquestionable labor of love. There’s so much emotion in it, and you had so many amazing people working with you on it; Steve Greenberg, Betty Wright, and Adam Blackstone. Would you say you’ve kind of had the same experience, with this upcoming album?
DB: Yeah, I hope to get another batch of really amazing musicians together, maybe a different sort of mix of people. I think the people that played on the record were really just amazing too and they were great at being able to play the songs and just really take them to a new level musically. I think on the next album I hope to work with people that can form more of a wider range of areas so we can bring more diverse elements to it. So yeah, I hope I get the opportunity to work with really great people like that again.
HW: Well, I’m really really looking so forward to this new album, and thank you so much for doing this interview with us.
DB: Oh, thank you!
