It couldn’t have been a hotter summer day, as I sat down to speak with Jay and Jawnee of That Noise about the depths of human energy and emotions, an enduring and key theme in their music. Jay and Jawnee teamed up to form That Noise near the end of 2006, and rapidly became a strong and unique force in L.A.’s music scene.
Two albums in now, their most recent one being The Way We Are, released earlier this year, That Noise shows no signs of slowing down. A flurry of their emotions ran deep as they spoke of past experiences, and future prospects.
HM: Hey guys. So what are Marcel and Kenny [the other half of That Noise] up to right now?
Jay: Well Marcel is at work, and Kenny is at work too.
HM: Where are they working?
Jay: They work in post production. They do film stuff. They make trailers for movies, all the stuff for upcoming TV shows and movies.
HM: How did you all know each other prior to forming That Noise?
Jay: Well, we were basically hanging out in the same social network in the music scene and I was playing in a band, Jawnee was in another band. And we were playing shows together. Well, eventually they disbanded and we all had a connection and had gone on a couple tours together. I was doing this whole electronic laptop kind of thing, and Jawnee had come on a couple tours with me and you know, we just slowly gravitated towards each other.
HM: Were you guys playing in shows frequently together?
Jay: Yeah, for about a year or so it was very frequent. 2 or 3 months straight.
HM: How did the name (That Noise) come about?
Jawnee: You know it’s kind of an interesting story. I was getting down with this girl and in the middle of our session outside the window a strange sound happened, which interrupted us, and she whispered out under her breath “That noise..” and it was some construction going on outside my house at the time and a whole bunch of shit fell out. That name kind of stuck with me. And when Jay and I were looking for band names I got inspired, because I am constantly drawing inspirations from women and moments of… pleasure.
HM: You guys formed back in 2006 right?
Jay: Yeah, that’s about right.
HM: Kenny and Marcel joined about 2; maybe 2 and half years ago. What made them decide to come around?
Jawnee: Well I have known Kenny for a while, he was in the same social network that J was talking about in other bands and we just had always hung out and never been in a band together, and it was just time.
We were looking for a drummer and he was down to hop on board. And do something new, we were trying to really push beyond all of our previous bands, musically, business wise, trying to go to the next level, try to manifest things that we never got to do in our former bands and Kenny was down to join the group.
- What made you decide to take a different route and form a band of your own?
- Are you looking for the band to stay more underground, or possibly step into the lime-light?
- Speaking of opportunities, Sylvia Massey produced The Way We Areshe’s a pretty big deal. How was it working with her?
